Medicine Pain Relievers

There are many options when it comes to medicine pain relievers that may be used to provide the relief from discomfort due to illness or injury. There are two types of pain, acute and chronic. Acute pain is often short-lived and is relieved when the condition causing it is healed. Chronic pain is long lasting and may go on for years without relief if proper treatment is not found. The difficulty lies in finding the best treatment for a chronic pain condition. This is something that cannot be done alone, but rather with the supervision of your physician.

Your doctor may recommend pain medication as a temporary fix for your problem. While no pain pill is going to cure the cause of your pain they can give you relief while you are healing or seeking treatment for whatever problem you may have. There are various types of prescription painkillers in both the narcotic and non-narcotic category. Narcotic pain relievers can be habit forming and are usually recommended for short term use of severe pain. Non-narcotic pain relievers may be able to be used for a longer period because they are not as risky from a medical standpoint.

There are also pain relievers that can be purchased over the counter. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs can help both pain and inflammation. Acetaminophen, most commonly known as Tylenol, is another type of over the counter pain reliever that may prove helpful for some conditions. Even though these two medications are over the counter they are not safe for everyone. For example, there are warnings on every package that explain who should and who should not take the medication. Also these medicines should not be used for longer durations than specified on the package or taken with other medicines without the approval of your doctor.

It may be necessary to try different medicine pain relievers before you find the best fit for you. What works for one type of pain may not work for another. A medication that provides full relief for one patient may not provide any for someone else. Each person, their tolerance to pain and the specifics of their medical condition is unique and should be treated medically as such. If you are ready to try pain medication for your discomfort you should see your doctor first before making any health related decisions.
