Methadone Pain Management
Methadone is a synthetic opiate that is most commonly used to treat withdrawal symptoms related to heroin addiction. There are methadone clinics all over the world where addicts can get a regular dose of this powerful pharmaceutical with the goal in mind being heroin abstinence and eventual methadone discontinuation at some point. However some individuals do experience methadone addiction which is why the subject of methadone pain management is so controversial. Occurrences like the tragic overdose deaths of model and reality star Anna Nicole Smith and her teen son Daniel have some wondering if this drug the best method of treating certain types of pain or are the risks too high?
It all depends on the type of pain being experienced and the cause of the pain. In cases of terminal cancer, methadone is the least of a patient's worries. Therefore many doctors believe methadone is an effective and relatively safe treatment for the management of pain related to terminal and/or potentially terminal illness. For other types of pain such as acute or chronic pain due to injury or non-terminal illness doctors usually try a less powerful and addictive medication. There are a wide variety of both narcotic and non-narcotic prescription pain relievers that may be prescribed for pain.
Examples of these medications include OxyContin, Vicodin and Percoset. These drugs are all prescribed to treat various types of pain. However they too present problems for some patients because of physical and emotional dependence issues. There are many Americans addicted to prescription pain killers first prescribed to them for the treatment of a legitimate pain issue. The end result is a raging addiction that can destroy one's life long after the original pain has subsided.
If you have questions or concerns about the issue of methadone pain management you should consult your doctor. Also there are pain clinics to which you can be referred by your primary care provider. These clinics specialize in managing acute and chronic pain, therefore they have the knowledge and experience to choose the proper pain management strategy for each individual. Most health insurance plans do cover pain clinic visits especially if your primary doctor referred you. With all the options available today, including methadone in some cases, no one should have to suffer with debilitating pain for very long.
